I was making SOME sales, but nowhere near enough considering all the hours I was putting in. It felt like I needed to promote myself 24-7 to get anywhere close to my sales targets. Some days I’d be at my desk ALL day, jumping from one thing to another, distracted by the latest ‘gimmick’ that promised to take my business into the stratosphere. I remember feeling so frustrated, asking myself ‘when is this finally going to come together? When is all this hard work going to start finally paying off?’
The answer came in an unusual way....
One day I was sitting at my desk, having a typical day of ‘doing’ a lot, but not making much progress, when I was distracted by a strange noise. As I turned to the window, I could see that the cause of the commotion was a fly frantically battling against the glass of the window. I felt a pang of sympathy for the fly’s plight. All of its frenzied attempts were totally futile. No amount of effort on the fly’s part would succeed at breaking through the glass. But the fly was so determined to exit via this particular route, that it did not realise that the door was open. I was struck by the irony that just ten seconds of flying time stood between this small creature and the outside world it seeked.
And then it hit me!
I was just like that fly! Up until that point, my main strategy for business success had simply been ‘work longer and harder’. And it HAD worked – for a time. But it wasn’t working any longer. Trying harder is NOT the solution to achieving more. In fact, it had become part of the problem. Just like the fly was so busy trying to break the glass that it couldn’t see its escape route, I was so focused on the short term in my business that I couldn’t see the bigger picture. But what if there was an easier, smarter route for ME – just as there was for the fly? I realised that I need to change my perspective and open to the possibility of an easier way.
So I did something I’d never done before
For the first time since I started my business, I took a step back and really started to analyse what I was doing in business, what was working, and what plainly WASN’T.
The first thing I noticed was that apart from needing MORE clients, I also needed the clients I had to SPEND more money with me. I also needed to stop trading time for money, and find ways of generating revenue that weren’t solely dependent upon my time.
The next thing I noticed was that I needed to create an automated process for converting interest into paying business. The way my business was set up, sales were only coming in when I was constantly doing things to stimulate those sales. I recognised that if I stopped putting the hours in, sales would instantly dry up, so I needed to find a way to make sales that weren’t dependent upon me personally.
Finally I needed to increase my visibility in the market place and make sure that I was constantly attracting new leads – without me physically having to go out and find those new leads every month. Ideally I wanted a SYSTEM which would bring me a steady stream of new prospects month after month.
By taking stock this way, I realised that there are ultimately only 3 ways to grow a business:
Increase the number of prospects (More Leads)
Increase the % conversion of leads to sales (More Clients)
Increase the value per customer by increasing average order size, and/or frequency of purchase (More Sales)
That’s IT. So I drew up a new business plan that would help me to focus on each of these areas. I still have a copy of that plan in my office (that’s a copy of it on the right)
You won’t believe what happened next....
First – EVERYTHING got simpler. It was so much easier to decide what to focus on, and what I could discard, because now I had a plan.
I could evaluate every opportunity according to whether it was ‘on strategy’ or not. Initially, I focused on converting the leads I already had, because it didn’t make sense to keep growing my list if I didn’t have a solid conversion process in place.
What that meant in practice was no more chasing my tail, getting distracted by the latest bright, shiny object, because I simply focused upon working the formula. I stopped trying to do everything at once and instead focused on ONE project or system at a time, before I moved onto the next piece.
The figures speak for themselves....
And the results QUICKLY showed up in my bank account. I’m talking days and weeks – not months or years. The first month I applied this formula, I made more than DOUBLE my previous highest month.
I’m really not exaggerating when I say that this formula can immediately double or triple your income.
