If I was only able to use ONE marketing tool in my business, without question, it would be the publication of this weekly newsletter. If I only had one hour to market my business each week, I would spend that hour writing and publishing this newsletter.

I believe that everyone who is marketing their own business stands to gain from publishing their own newsletter. In this article I want to explain why it’s such a valuable addition to your marketing efforts, and something you can’t afford not to include in your own marketing mix.

A newsletter will FREE up tons of your marketing time

It’s ironic that the number one excuse I hear for people not publishing their own email newsletter is ‘I don’t have time!’. That’s exactly why you need one. Minute by minute, a newsletter delivers way more from your investment of time than any other marketing method I know of.

We all know that staying in touch with customers and prospects is important. But – especially for a small business - if you don't have a system in place for staying in touch, it can also be very time consuming and expensive. It’s hard to reach people by phone AND it can make you look desperate. Going to networking meetings is also time consuming.

The problem with all of these techniques is that they are what I describe as ‘one-to-one’ marketing techniques. You can only reach one person at a time, and so there is a limit to how many people you can reach per hour. Your return on your investment of time is finite.

The beauty of a newsletter is that it is a ‘one-to-many’ marketing technique. It takes me the same hour to write my newsletter that now goes out to over 5,000 subscribers as it did when I only had 50 readers. The net effect of this is that it has freed up my time.

How to make sure YOUR name is in front of the RIGHT prospect at the RIGHT time

The first time a prospects hears about you, they may not be ready to buy. Statistics show that people don't usually purchase a product or service until they've seen 7 to 10 messages about it! The fact is that people’s needs change over time. The key to success is making sure that YOU'RE the person they think of when they're ready to buy.

How do you make sure that YOU are the person they think of when they are ready to take action? How do you ensure the prospect calls you when they move from ‘just looking’ to ‘ready to buy’? Timing IS everything, and if you following up by phone, making the right call at the right time is like a spin of the roulette wheel AND you can feel like you’re hassling prospects.

The answer is to have a low cost method of staying in touch. One that doesn’t drain your resources, and doesn’t make your prospect feel pressured either. An email newsletter is an IDEAL solution because you can build the relationship over time, position yourself as an expert who provides value, and make sure that YOU are the person they call when they are ready to move forward.

If you hate the idea of ‘marketing and selling’, a newsletter will do it for you

Why do you think marketing giants like Procter & Gamble and Unilever spend a fortune on creating free samples when they launch a new product? Because it’s a proven business builder. It’s more cost effective for them to create and give away free samples, than it is to just invest in advertising that tells people how great the new product is.

The same is true for your business. Trying to convince people is time consuming and expensive. It makes more sense to let them experience what you have to offer and convince themselves. An email newsletter gives you a chance to demonstrate your expertise simultaneously to a large group of people.  You don’t have to brag or make claims. You can simply share what you know and let your readers draw their own conclusions.

Too much effort for too little return?

People who think that publishing a newsletter is too much effort for too little return are simply missing the point. Yes, there is creative energy involved when you first get up and running, but writing your newsletter is a marketing task that will pay dividends over and over. A recent newsletter I sent out generated £2574 within 24 hours. I think of the hour I spent writing that newsletter as an hour well spent!

Even if you only averaged £500 with each newsletter you publish, over the course of the year that would add up to £26,000. And that's JUST from the newsletter. Not bad for just one hour a week, is it? If you could hire a salesperson for just one hour a week and know that they would generate over £26,000 in sales wouldn't you hire them?

And in case you think you need a HUGE list to make significant profits from your newsletter,  most email newsletters publishers agree that you can earn a very nice living from a list of just 1,000 people. (And I’ve had great returns from lists as small as 500) You absolutely don’t need a massive list to make it worth your while.

If you aren’t already publishing a newsletter, don’t delay another day. It’s never too soon to get started.

‘But how will I find time to write and produce it?’

I know that when you are starting out, the creative effort that setting up and producing a regular newsletter takes CAN seem overwhelming and more trouble than it’s worth.

But it doesn’t have to. It’s easier when you have a system to follow

The technology doesn’t have to overwhelm you. Take it from me. If you can type a word document, you can write your own newsletter.

It gets easier when you have a system to follow, and you have someone take you by the hand and say ‘OK, this is exactly what you need to do to get maximum results in minimum time.’
